How often do…..
Now now, watch where your mind might wander. I was not wanting to know about your personal life. Well, actually, I would like to know a couple of things about your personal life, just not that personal.
And, as most of you know, I’ve been doing reviews for Mother Talk but this was my first time for a book review. Maybe I just don’t look like a book reader or something. Really though, I like my reading to be short stuff off the internet or out of magazine. However, I jumped on the opportunity because honestly, I couldn’t remember the last time I read a book……
So, I’m thinking about the last book I read in full. I’m not talking about the parenting books (because we all know that we skip around in those when the author starts to write about stuff we don’t agree with, haha), or financial books that I didn’t finish because I was so depressed. Hummm……I’m still thinking….I’m quite old so don’t rush me….ok, I couldn’t come up with one. So, I read this one
and was more than just a little confusing. Remember, I haven’t read books like this in ages. And, I do have mono and one of its symptoms is confusion, I read this book while getting injections of pain medication every 4 hours or so to keep me happy. And, I liked it. I really did.
I had read a little over half and was about to nap. My mom was there with me and I asked her to read the book. I told her that she didn’t have to finish it all at one time. Then I added she didn’t have to read past the first chapter but to please read that far. (My mom and I are not necessarily fiction readers but we both read this, just because we started and couldn’t give up on it, it is just one that had to be finished.)
By late Saturday afternoon, mom had been traded for Boy Genius as a babysitter for me, apparently I wasn’t doing so well?)and since Boy Genius was sitting in the room with me, I figured, what the heck, he should read the book as well. He loves Science Fiction. But, I gave him the same opportunity to only read through the first chapter and then if he wasn’t interested in finishing it, that was fine. Of course there was a TV in the room, we only turned it on once to check the weather. That was a quick one, the satellite was out. We are spoiled with our TV and the whole DVR stuff, so I asked him to read it as well since I needed another nap.
When I woke up, he was done. I asked for my mom’s thoughts and they were very much like mine, simple. It was good but I prefer reality to science fiction. That was about all we had to say. But, when I asked Boy Genius, I got the following…and I suspect it will give you a ride on reality of the non-reality but just remember, all 3 of us read the book in one weekend, Boy Genius and my Mom in one day, in one siting even and me over the course of the weekend.
Boy Genius’ review:
The first thing I said was "well, what did you think?". His reply was
"do you realize I read that book in one day and the last time I read an entire book was……..(he’s old too, bare with him)…Isaac Asimov’s Robots and Empire. (I looked at him as if he had basically grown 2 heads and chewed off one of my arms.
So, I continued to try get information and he continued with:
"it was a good book, I forgot how much I love science fiction. I basically sat still in one sitting and read this book, now that is something I’ve probably never done. (
He has ADD, I can imagine that prior to treatment which only started 3 years ago, he didn’t complete any task in one sitting.)
"I know the book was written for a younger audience than myself but as an avid Science Fiction reader, I felt the author did an excellent job of creating the scenes without going overboard for younger readers.
As a person that struggles with gifts for Boy Genius, I was so excited to hear him get excited about this. Since we met we’ve been to one movie…and it was one I chose. I don’t like movies and like I said, I just don’t read that much. I see signs in my head, I’d buy Wally word right out of all books and DVD’s that were science fiction related…..finally, oh, yea, it’s going to be a great Christmas.
I have an on-line buddy that I’ve already promised the book to so she can read it too.
"It was a good read and I figure if someone my age enjoyed it and wanted to finish it without doing something else first, then the intended audience should be spell bound."
"I don’t want to tell much more so that I don’t spoil the read for everyone else. The best I can say is go get it, read it and try to figure ia way to read it in its entirety in one day day so you don’t have to put it down. It really is best if read all at once."
Here is a trailer that you might enjoy too:
So, I figure if 3 people that are not even part of the author’s intended audience liked the book as much as we have, those youngsters out there are gonna love it.
