I can distinctly remember my first grade teachers smell. And, it wouldn’t be near as prolific if my cousin, just a year younger than me brought this very teacher up in a conversation lately and said, “do you remember how good she always smelled?” I was shocked. I don’t know why I thought I was the only person who would remember that but I’d love to know where this teacher is now because I’d loved to tell her that when I smell that particular smell, no matter where I am, I get this feeling of complete comfort. I feel at ease and as if everything is going to be ok because I have her right there to protect me. And, Twitter Moms wants to know what all you remember regarding smell as well.
Don’t get me wrong, she spatted my leg a few times for talking in the hall but for the most part, the smell from her lingers and I can spot it anywhere. The name of the smell, I have no idea and neither did my cousin but we both know what we know and I guarantee you that if either of us smelled it, we would start looking around to see if we could find her.
As for my smell, I think my smell is the one that comes with the dryer sheets. I know that sounds crazy but I don’t wear a lot of perfume or anything and the smell of my dryer sheets lingers and sometimes I even leave clothes in the washing machine with some Downey softener overnight to soak before rinsing and putting them in the dryer. And, I absolutely must coordinate my smells, must have the exact smell of the liquid softener as I have in the dryer sheets, that means the smell lingers much longer.
And, other than that, I have a particular lotion. The name is Brown Sugar and Fig and the first time I used it was in the dead of winter. Now, when it starts to get just a bit cool, I want some of this particular lotion. Then, as summer approaches, I want to move to a lotion that smells like the beach, coconut anything will send me reeling of days kicked back on the beach.
Up until about 10 years ago, the only smell that I could say mattered to me was that of my first grade teacher, but now, as I have aged…oh my, did I have to say that, I find that smells like Brown Sugar and Fig and Coconet anything make me thing of certain happy times in my life. And, of course, the smell of Downey reminds me of freshly washed baby clothes because if there’s a smell in my house that accompanies babies other than the clean soap smell is the smell of their clothes.
