Responsibility on the Field

I wrote a post similar to this weeks ago about his man..

prof randy

And, with that post, I explained that this is a genuine man who has a genuine love for the game.  His son was one of the coaches and he had 2 grandson’s on the team.  But, never did I see him show preference for his own g-kids nor did the other coach…

show any signs that he had a preference for his own son or his nephew.  I even told the story of how when my own son was able to handled a triple play unassisted, I looked and this coach was bear-hugging my son and spinning him around like we had won the world series or something.

I played collegiate sports and even before anyone knew if my first child was a boy or a girl, people were asking me “where will he/she play ball” and “how old will he/she have to be to start where you live”.  People (and probably including myself, although I’d prefer not to admit it) had high hopes for my kids in the area of team sports.

But, once the time come for my son to actually play, I immediately was drawn to this family.  Even though they were not my son’s coaches last year, I knew from watching that my kids needed this man’s help as a coach.  So, when registration time come around this year, I went in search of this family.

I liked their values, they wanted to win and like me, they believe winning is way more fun than losing, however their approach was such that most of the time, the kids rarely ever asked the score.  We played in a couple of tournaments and they knew then that winning or losing would make the decision on when and if we played again.   But, even still, it was never about purely winning, it was about doing the best you can, about playing your best and being happy with that.

I can honestly say that in my opinion, Responsible Sports, is what we accomplished this year. Next year, Mini Me will be able to continue to play with these same kids and families, Ditto Boy will be too old and will have to move up.  So, I am not sure what we will do to when it comes to putting him on a certain team, but you can guarantee, I’ll use these folks as references for good coaches.  Because really, that’s just how they roll.

I am including this quick video that I made of the kids and then I”m going to explain the premise behind this extra post.

Ok, so here’s the deal, I am entering this post in a contest and I need comments comments comments on this post, so please, read and comment often.  And, if you can tweet the following

“@The_Jerri_Ann has entered #responsible sports, go comment on her post & help her win http://bit.ly/4oMIOR”

and you then can help me win….puhleeeze and thank you.

Roundin’ Third and Headed for Home

Post- Season – T-ball

Ok, so this season has been a lot of fun.  I don’t know if it is because we haven’t been beat in the regular season, if it’s because the kids are older and understand (see triple out, that’s what Ditto Boy calls it anyway) or if it is just a more at ease feeling for the other players and coaches.  It has been a great season.  Tonight was the first game of the post-season and we won, 17-9 in 3 innings.

Add to that this awesome new camera made by Vado that I won from a Newbaby party and heck fire, I am just rockin’ hot this season.  I can promise you that the fun hasn’t been fun because of the 5 month long in a cast and a bone graph surgery with plates and screws yesterday.  I had to boot skoot out of my house to get the game this afternoon, use a wheelchair to get around the outskirts of the field and you know what?  It’ still a rockin’ season……Just check it out and see what you think…..such a cute pink Vado Camera that is easy peasey to use…

Just a short Update…on me

I am good…doing good, working myself silly only to lose my big long novel post because my brand new mini-laptop went kapooop.  I’ve only had it 2 weeks…so er…yea, ack.  But, on to good things, Boy Genius traveled alone today…wait let me back up….

Yesterday morning, we are playing the only other undefeated team in our league, they were 7-0, we were 7-0 and the time was there for us to meet.  A quick run down of the rules for this tball stuff here.  They play each inning until the team batting gets 3 outs or they get 7 runs.  Then, same thing for the home team in their half of the inning.   They only play 4 innings and they have a 2 hour limit.  They have a 14 run mercy rule in 3 innings.

So, it is the top of the third, we were down by 3 runs, no outs, bases were loaded.  The first fly ball ever hit by an opponent was hit to Ditto Boy at third base.  He caught it, he ran like a mad man back to third base as he has been told to do in practice.  So, caught the fly.  Out one, stepped on his bag and the runner had left third and couldn’t get back, Out 2, then he heard someone say tag her and he looked …and the girl running from second base couldn’t get turned around and back to 2nd base so he tagged her.  That my friends is an unassisted triple play.

If you read my post the other day, you know I am so proud of my kids playing Tball and even more proud of the people we have chosen to play with.  This is something that I can’t express to you enough how important it is to have your kid on a team with good people, good adults coaching and good adults parenting the other players.  We have the best of all the worlds of this right now.

One more quick story, then 3 quotes and I’ll shush for today.  Earlier in the weekat a practice, the coaches grandson, caught a fly ball.  It was practice ya’ll and we celebrated like it was the winning of the World Series.  The kid’s dad (who is one of the coaches and is just as awesome as his dad) ran to his son and grabbed him and was whirling around in circles with him.  His son is very talented.  He is only 4 and he not only knows a lot about baseball, but his dad can tell him where to hit the ball, and he does.  They say he is much better at golf.  Just an amazing little athlete at age 4.

Well, yesterday when my son singled handedly carried out a triple play, everyone was celebrating.  I stood from my chair to applaud my son (I don’t generally do that, I do my best to keep this in perspective, they are 4 and 5, clapping is good – pushing and making expectations — not so good).  When I looked Boy Genius was putting Ditto Boy down out of one of those big bear hugs.  Immediately, and I mean immediately ya’ll, the coach  that I mentioned above has picked up my 65 pound son and his whirling around with him.

I don’t think there are words to tell you what that felt like to me.  Earlier in the week the wife or grandmother of the coaching crew hugged me, told me that they had read what I had written about the grandaddy and son and grandson and my feelings.  She said that someone told the daughter in law and she printed it and showed it to them.  She was about to cry when she walked away and she said that the coach, the granddad coach, almost cried reading it.

So, I told you all that to tell yoiu that of al lthe horror stories you hear about youth leagues and all the horrible stories about you hear about parents acting crazy….there is some awesome people out there, doing the right things and doing it all for the good of the kids.

Our kids only had to score 5 runs in the both of the inning and the game was over.  And, we did and a storm came through, raining, lightening and crazy.  People were grabbing bags and trying to shove kids in autos and just getting out of there.

Normally the kids on our team don’t think too much about whether they won or lost.  My kids rarely even ask.  It’s something the parents think about, we talk about but we don’t even get the kids all in whiz about it.  And you know what, I play to win, I want to win when I play, I am competitive.  But, you know what else I want………..I want my kids to be happy, to be with people (adults and children) that want them around.  And, honsetly, rumor is the post-season tournment will start on Tuesday night and we arne’t home.  So, hopefully they get rained out til my husband and I get back there.  I can’t stand the thoughts of missing one second of their fun.

Ok, too long to add my funnies here….coming up next…….

I know you all are dying for more Baseball Pictures

Ok, so check this out….there’s more photos of my sweet darlings…..playing baseball….and we even have poster size pictures of a couple of them.  My kids think they are super special with these big ol’ posters on their wall…and so I give you…
